From October 20 to October 22, 2025, ACT members from the USA, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and the Guianas gathered in Costa Rica for a transformative event. Joined by board members, donors, guests, and Indigenous partners — María del Rosario “Charito” Chicunque, Pablo Chindoy, and Marinete Tukano — the gathering focused on strategic conversations to align ACT around its next chapter while honoring its 30-year legacy.
With the support of the Presencing Institute and longtime partner and mediator Merrick Hoben from the Consensus Building Institute, participants engaged in grounding discussions and activities to reflect on ACT’s 2026–2028 Strategic Planning.

Day 1: Looking Back to Move Forward
The first day began with a deep dive into ACT’s timeline, showcasing milestones and stories from the past three decades. Each participant placed themselves on the timeline, sharing personal experiences and key moments that shaped ACT’s journey. This exercise sparked meaningful conversations about ACT’s evolution and the diversity of voices that have contributed to its success.

“One of the things that I liked the most was to see the long line of events that ACT has gone through and see the people who made it possible. Apart from knowing more about the epic/outstanding moments of the organization, just seeing the timeline and the people was amazing. I also liked the great variety of backgrounds and countries that encompass the current ACT, which of course will be the future for all new endeavors and projects.” – Juan Carlos Cruz, Costa Rica Team Science & Conservation Manager
In addition, in the afternoon the teams participated in an activity called “Fishbowl”, where they were invited to join the center of the circle and debate critical questions, such as:
- What external forces and challenges are shaping our future?
- What are the missing pieces to make the plan effective?
- How do we incorporate voices that we are not yet hearing?

Day 2: Envisioning the Future Together
The second day began with a hike through Costa Rica’s lush landscapes, offering participants a chance to connect with nature and reflect on the importance of ACT’s mission. The full day was far from just a walk in the forest: it was filled with strategic discussions and visioning exercises.

Throughout the day, participants explored ACT’s potential future and what challenges we must overcome to get there. Conversations focused on turning obstacles into resources and imagining bold steps forward. Key themes included:
- Justice & Democracy
- Organizational Evolution
- Collective Leadership
“The highlight to me was having the opportunity for the offices, Indigenous partners, board, and supporters to come together, build trust, and engage in sometimes difficult conversations that move us towards a more unified ACT. Another highlight was seeing this new generation of leadership stepping up in the organization. I’m excited to see so many people energized and thinking creatively and ambitiously about what’s next.” – Thea Van Gorp, United States Team Development Manager
“For me, the most incredible thing about Costa Rica was witnessing the power of collective creation. ACT is full of brilliant minds — people capable of imagining possible futures and transforming realities. I truly believe that trusting in that collective power is something magical. That’s what stood out the most for me: the collective building of an organization filled with experience, creativity, and an undeniable magnetism.” – Juana Hofman, Colombia Team Technical Director
Day 3: From Reflection to Action
The final day shifted from reflection to action. Through exercises like 3D mapping of themes and scenarios, participants explored how to bring the future into being through concrete steps. In addition, Indigenous partners from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Guianas shared powerful testimonials, guiding conversations about the role of the organization as their partner and supporter.

The day ended with connecting conversations about emerging topics and the need for each office to take action and look ahead to the next years. Together, participants committed to joining forces as “One ACT” and stepping boldly into the next phase of our shared journey.
“For me the most important highlight was building the personal connections with everyone. I think this part is crucial for our work going forward.” – Glynis Williams, Guianas Team Social Science Coordinator
“What stood out for me were the ideas that emerged around overcoming the challenges of collective governance in a unified organization. The moments that helped solidify ACT’s identity as more than just a funder or an advocate for Indigenous rights — but as a true partner on the ground. Together, we explored ways to support communities in building solutions for their needs and struggles, especially in this context of growing expectations for direct funding for community-based NGOs.” – Ayrton Vollet, Brazil Team Program Coordinator
