May 3, 2010 - The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT®), whose mission is to work in partnership with indigenous people to protect the rainforest, has announced it was named a recipient of Nature's Path Organic Foods' 2010 EnviroKidz Giving Back Award.  The Giving Back Program donates money to non-profit organizations, such as ACT, that support endangered species, habitat conservation and environmental education for kids.

"Receiving the 2010 EnviroKidz Giving Back Award from Nature's Path enables us to continue to bring indigenous youth and elders together, allowing future generations of these societies to carry forward their legacy environmental and cultural knowledge that has enabled them to safeguard their forests over thousands of years," said Dr. Mark J. Plotkin, President of ACT.  "We deeply appreciate both the award and the Nature's Path customers who have made it possible."

Every year, in the vast rainforest interior of the South American country of Suriname, ACT brings indigenous youth and elders together to visit and learn to protect places that are significant to their history and their natural world.  Facing rapid acculturation, the youth of three villages-Kwamalasamutu, Tepu, and Apetina-are introduced to activities that promote cultural ties and diminish generational gaps that can threaten a rainforest community.  ACT will also continue traditional school activities in the three villages that teach students their connection to the natural world and their key role as stewards of their forests.

"It means so much to us to be able to support organizations like the Amazon Conservation Team that are actively working to preserve the environment," said Arran Stephens, President and Founder of Nature's Path Organic Foods.  "The incredible customers who support our EnviroKidz line made it possible, and we are extremely grateful to them."

Nature's Path, North America's number one organic cereal manufacturer celebrated the 10 year anniversary of its EnviroKidz Giving Back Award last year.  For more information, go to www.naturespath.com.
