Women's Programs: Suriname
ACT has guided women of the Trio indigenous village of Tepu in establishing a sustainable income generation project based on the production of native pepper for urban markets. ACT funded the construction of a pepper processing facility built from local materials for the women's use, while providing ongoing training in conservation-oriented agriculture that incorporates both traditional and modern methods.
During the process the women also develop skills in modern administration, marketing, and product distribution. With ACT’s help, the women have test-marketed their product in Paramaribo, Suriname's major city, and the women are prepared to run the project autonomously with ACT in an advisory capacity. With their product now actually in the marketplace, the women are able to observe firsthand what works best in a commercial environment and to make modifications accordingly—they are true participants in the market economy.
