In the rainforests of southern Suriname, where ACT operates four traditional medicine clinics in partnership with local communities, ACT also supports the shamans and apprentices who oversee treatment at those facilities to achieve intergenerational transmission of ancestral medicinal knowledge. This knowledge is undocumented, and would be lost to history without active promotion of this work. ACT's "Shamans and Apprentice" program in Suriname supports the activities of 28 shamans and apprentices across four villages. At the clinics, the apprentices enjoy hands-on training from the elders, and serve as the ones best able to apply western documentation methods to save this knowledge in perpetuity.
